Check the easy options

Building management, a landlord or a security desk may hold a key. A co-owner or manager may live nearby. Five minutes of phone calls can save a service call.

Then call a locksmith

Tell dispatch the business name, the address, the kind of door (glass storefront, steel back door, office suite) and that you're authorized to be there. Expect to show ID and something linking you to the business.

Opening vs replacing

Most office lockouts are opened without damage. If a lock is broken or a key snapped inside, the locksmith may need to replace the cylinder, and should confirm the price first.

Stop the next one

  • Keep a spare key with a second manager
  • Keep a written list of who holds keys
  • Rekey when someone leaves without returning theirs
  • Consider a master-key system as you grow
